About a Co-operative Nursery School
The Manotick Co-operative Nursery School is a non-profit organization in which parents have the opportunity to take an active role in creating an exceptional learning experience for their child. Our classes are taught by qualified nursery school teachers who report to the school's Director, the staff reports to an elective Board of Directors made up of parent volunteers. In a co-operative, all members (parents of children enrolled in the school) assist in the classroom on a rotational basis and contribute their own personal skills to the daily operations of the school. This could include helping manage the school by being on the Board of Directors, helping with Publicity, helping the teachers or planning an event in the community. The co-operative philosophy provides children with a rich learning environment while offering parents a unique opportunity to actively participate in their child’s first school experience.
Learning Through Play
Manotick Co-operative Nursery School follows a “play-based curriculum”. These programs are designed to broaden each child's learning experience through play with group and individual activities. Through play children can develop social and cognitive skills, mature emotionally and gain self-confidence. "PLAY enables children to make sense of their world and makes learning fun". Our Early Childhood Education (ECE) teachers provide a safe educational environment that allows children to experiment and explore in creative play, music, art, science, math and language. We want to help prepare children for school and be excited about learning !
The Manotick Cooperative Nursery School was "born" January 1959 on a bitterly cold morning in the basement of Manotick Public School. Fees were set at $15/month with rent at $10/month. The first newsletter reminded parents there was a 7 day exclusion policy for polio. At that time, kindergarten classes had not been established in the local school so Manotick Co-operative Nursery School attempted to fill the needs of both pre-school and kindergarten-aged children.
After extensive fundraising, Manotick Co-operative Nursery School secured its own permanent home in the Manotick Community Center (5572 Doctor Leach Drive) in September 1995.
Today we are one of the longest running and most well-attended preschools in Ottawa. We look forward to yet another 50 years of learning and growing in the community.
